2nd Sultan of Johor Cup: India humble Australia 2-0

Indian junior men’s hockey team launched their campaign in the second Sultan of Johor Cup on an impressive note, pipping formidable Australia 2-0 at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
The 2-0 win was a sweet revenge for India after their narrow 2-3 defeat to Australia in the inaugural edition last year.
The men in blue shirts played a tight game and did not allow the Aussies any open spaces in their goalmouth from the outset.
In fact, the usual free-flowing hockey was missing from the Australians as they struggled to stitch penetrative moves. The Oz did look good when they maintained possession but they often ran out of ideas once they entered the Indian striking circle.
Both teams had their share of scoring chances in the first half but goals continued to elude them. India earned two penalty corners in the first half but frittered them away.
Both teams tried to show more urgency in the second half in a bid to break the deadlock.
It was India who took the lead in the 49th minute when Sukhmanjit Singh rattled the cage following a smartly executed short corner.
Australia pressed hard for the equalizer but the tight Indian defence kept them at bay. All hopes of an Australian comeback went up in smoke when Tirkey Amon Misrah sounded the board in the final minute to give India a convincing 2-0 victory.

Dhanraj Pillay against foreign coaches

Kolkata:

Former captain Dhanraj Pillay is not interested in talking about Indian hockey anymore after India's forgettable London Olympics performance and also questioned the rationale behind appointing foreign coaches.

"Please don't ask me anything about Indian hockey. 12 teams mein se 12th finish karna ... Ab isse bhibura kuchh ho sakta hai kya (When the country finishes 12th out of 12... Can it be worse than this)?" asked Pillay.

"Till Olympics, we kept our mouth shut. But what now? It's really surprising that nobody is talking about the debacle and in fact now looking to win a medal in Rio 2016!

"First take the corrective measures for what went wrong (in London), then start talking about Rio ... But nobody is bothered," the four-time Olympian told.

Post-Olympics, as India begin to rebuild by playing in the Super Series in Australia followed by Champions Trophy, Pillay has strong objections to India's coach Michael Nobbs -- or for that matter any foreign coach.

"Indian hockey cannot grow under a foreign coach. There is a strong divide in the culture that results in communication gap. I don't understand how India decides to renew the contract with the coach paying a fat salary even after the debacle in London.

"You have to bring a coach from a player's point of view and a foreign coach is not suited for India," the former mercurial striker said.

Pillay also felt sad that big fan-based Kolkata clubs like Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohmmadan Sporting have stopped producing hockey teams.

"The three clubs were very popular in my days... I'm sure hockey will develop if they start to have hockey teams again. It will really benefit Bengal.

"I've some good memories of Kolkata. I remember coming here as a 20-year-old for a function that had legendary players like Leslie Claudius, Keshav Dutt. It was really inspirational."

Pillay had earlier expressed his intention to join the administration and resolve the dispute between Hockey India and IHF.

He had said that if HI continued to rule Indian hockey, performance will not improve in the next five years and it was time that the sports minister dissolved both HI and IHF and form a new unified body which should have sportspersons in it.

Ask Hockey India about team's performance at the London Olympics, not me: Michael Nobbs

Jalandhar:
India's hockey coach Michael Nobbs on Saturday refused to dwell on the team's London Olympics flopshow, saying that all queries on the matter should be directed to Hockey India, not him.

Nobbs, who was here to witness an exhibition match, sidestepped queries on India's s worst ever Olympic performance.

"I cannot answer any question. Any question on India's poor Olympic performance should be asked to Hockey India," Nobbs said.

"I have been instructed by Hockey India to not answer questions on this, so I cannot comment. It would be better if you speak to Hockey India on the matter," added the Australian when persisted on the issue.

India finished 12th at the Olympics after losing all its matches.
